Rail Ale Pub Walk – Cantley to Reedham

Rail Ale Pub Walk – Cantley to Reedham
Saturday 24th March 2018

Humpty Dumpty Brewery is celebrating English Tourism Week (17th – 25th March 2018) in Norfolk with the Wherry Lines Community Rail Partnership by hosting a free guided walk on Saturday 24th March 2018 from Cantley to Reedham.

The walk will begin at the Reedcutter Inn, Cantley, at around 12:45pm.   The pub is a 3-minute walk away from Cantley station.  The walk is approximately 3 miles long or roughly one hour to Reedham Ferry Inn by the River Yare. From there, it is an approximately 15-minute walk to Reedham station.   Starting at this time from Cantley gives those participating time to travel & meet up by train from Norwich, Lowestoft & Great Yarmouth.

Both Cantley and Reedham are picturesque villages located on the banks of the River Yare on the area of the Norfolk Broads known as the South Rivers.   The river and the railway line are the reason the villages exist and have become what they are today.   First, the river allowed supplies & goods to be moved around via the famous Wherries, built and operating since the 1600’s.  Leisure activities were established – fishing, sailing.  Then came the railway – the line between Yarmouth to Norwich was the first railway line in Norfolk, built almost 175 years ago.  The line to Lowestoft is unique in having 2 working swingbridges (built in the early 1900’s), giving access across the river Yare.  Both industry and tourism flourished in the area.

There have been public houses at both the Reedcutter, Cantley and Reedham Ferry sites since the late 18th century, and you will learn more about the history of the pubs and the area during the walk.  The walk with pass along a public footpath on the northern river bank* of the River Yare, mirroring a stretch of the famous Wherryman’s Way footpath on the other side of the river

*if weather conditions or footpath closures make this difficult, we may divert along quiet country lanes

To join the free event, please catch the 11:36 service to Cantley if you are travelling from Norwich to arrive at 11:52. If you are travelling from Lowestoft, please catch the 11:48 service to arrive at Cantley at 12:16. If you are travelling from Great Yarmouth, please catch the 11:17 service and change at Brundall to catch the 11:46 service which arrives in Cantley at 11:52. At the end of the walk, there are several hourly services that depart from Reedham station.
